Kitschy Etsy Home Finds

One of my favorite things to do is to surf Etsy for the strangest stuff I can find–it’s fun! There are so many categories with so many weird and crafty things; things that will make people stop and stare. But whether they’re marveling in awe or in horror, one thing is for sure: if you found it on Etsy, it will probably stand out.

These are the things that make a closet, your closet and a house your home. Sure some Etsy finds may be a little cheesy, or even tacky, but if you work it into an otherwise tasteful decor, it works! It can add a punch of personality and interest that sets your room apart from even the most well-designed spaces.

More importantly though, a good find can make you happy! For example, recently I ventured into Etsy’s kitsch houseware section to find a few eclectic picks with potential–and find them I did.

Here’s a list of my top 5 finds.

First up: this cool bike-wheel clock. Re-purposed from a recycled aluminum bike wheel–complete with scuffing, scratches and warping–this fun time piece would undoubtedly make for a great conversation piece as well. It also works as a great way to add an unexpected playfulness to a room without looking too cutesy. Handcrafted in the USA, this clock sells for $119.

Second up is this fun scissor wall decal by VerdigrisDye. Not only would it add a dash of whimsy to a room, it also serves as a fantastic decorating tool for a craft room or other creative space. And for someone with personal ties to scissors, like say a hair stylist, it would also work in bringing your personality to your decor.

Like the concept but not the scissors? This seller has several other decals from which to pick, all retailing for around $10 a pop.

The secret to successful decorating is to add many subtle layers of interest. That is, rather than using bold pieces to grab attention, find ways to work in small-yet-interesting pieces all across a room. Small things like this little handmade owl doorknob hanger, for example. It shows that you have put a lot of thought into your home. Plus, the multi-faceted fabric helps tie things together.

This guy sells for $11. The seller also has sets of three mini owls for $12.

Whether you love Scrabble and letters or just want to add a shabby chic feel to a room, these tiny throw pillows make for an excellent accent to any room. Place them across the couch, on the mantle or on the coffee table–they are small enough to go anywhere a little character is needed.

When ordering you can select ready-made messages like the one above or request words or phrases of your own choosing. Whatever you like! Final cost: $5 a pillow.

Pets need some pretty in their life too, right? Right! Which is why this set of flowery place mats is so great. Not only do they work great to fancy up the cat food dishes, they’ll also add a dash of flair into your cat’s daily routine.

Made from oilcloth they wipe clean with a damp cloth. Grab one for $12.50.
